Kadala Curry | Kerala Style

Kadala Curry
Kadala curry is one of the special breakfast dish from Kerala. Bengal gram is the main ingredient of this dish and it goes best with Appam Puttu Podi chapati or rice. Here is a recipe.

 Ingredients. 

3/4 Cup Bengal gram.
2 cups water for soaking Bengal gram
2 and 1/2 cups of water for boiling for pressure cooking Bengal gram.
1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds.
1 inch cinnamon bark.
3 strands of mace
2 pinches of nutmeg powder
3 cloves
1/2 cup grated coconut
1 by 4 Cup coconut water
1 by 3 Cup chopped onion
1/2 inch ginger chopped
10 curry leaves
2 green chillies
1/2 mustard seeds
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1/4 teaspoon red chilli powder
2 tablespoons coconut oil.
Salt to taste                                                   

How to prepare

Step   1. Soak the Bengal gram in water overnight.
Step   2. Add salt and boil the Bengal gram in a pressure cooker, wait 4 to 8 whistles.
Step   3. Blend the great coconut. Add coconut water if it becomes too dry.
Step   4. Dry roast the fennel seeds, mace, nutmeg, clove and cinnamon.
Step   5. Grain the roasted spices and keep aside
Step   6. Add 2 tablespoons of coconut oil into a pan and add mustard seeds.
Step   7. When the mustard seed start to crackle, add chopped green chilli and saute for 2 minutes.
Step   8. Add ginger and chopped green chilli, fry it for 30 seconds.
Step   9. Add the curry leaves and allow it to cook till the onions turn translucent.
Step 10. Add powdered roasted spices, chilli powder and coriander powder and fry for 3 minutes.
Step 11. Add the blended coconut paste and mix well for 4 to 5 minutes on low flame.
Step 12. Add the boiled Bengal gram and cook for about one minute.
Step 13. Add two cups of water and enough salt to taste. Allow it to boil.
Stay 14. Switch off the flame, we can serve this with Fort Appam over rice
